Safe Thawing Instructions for Feed

  • Place the mouse in a bag: Put the frozen mouse into a sealable (zip-lock) plastic bag.

Note: Water should not come into direct contact with the mouse. A wet mouse sticks to the substrate (bedding) in the terrarium, which the snake could accidentally ingest. Furthermore, wet fur loses its natural scent, which can deter some snakes.

  • Cold bath (Thawing): Submerge the bag with the mouse in a bowl of cold or lukewarm water. Leave it there for 15–30 minutes (depending on the size of the mouse).

  • Goal: Slow thawing of the core without bacteria starting to multiply on the surface.

  • Warm bath (Warming to body temperature): Once the mouse is soft, replace the water with warm tap water (approx. 40–45 °C). Leave it there for another 10–15 minutes.

  • Goal: To warm the prey to the body temperature of a living rodent (approx. 37–39 °C). Snakes (especially pythons and boas) have thermoreceptors, and "warm" prey triggers their feeding reflex.

  • Checking temperature and core: Hold the mouse (through the bag) and squeeze its abdomen.

  • It must be soft: If you feel a hard lump or coldness inside, the center is still frozen. Never serve a partially frozen mouse – it will cause temperature shock and fatal digestive issues.

  • Temperature test: Place the mouse (in the bag) against the inside of your wrist (similar to checking baby milk). It should be pleasantly warm, not hot.
