Safe Thawing Instructions for Feed

  • Place the rat in a bag: Put the frozen rat into a sealable (zip-lock) plastic bag.

Water should not come into direct contact with the rat. A wet rat sticks to the substrate (bedding) in the terrarium, which the snake could swallow. Furthermore, wet fur loses its natural scent, which can deter some snakes.

  • Cold bath (Thawing): Submerge the bag with the rat in a bowl of cold or lukewarm water. Leave it there for 15–30 minutes (depending on the size of the rat).

  • Goal: Slow thawing of the core without bacteria starting to multiply on the surface.

  • Warm bath (Heating to body temperature): Once the rat is soft, replace the water with warm tap water (approx. 40–45 °C). Leave it there for another 10–15 minutes.

  • Goal: Heat the prey to the body temperature of a living rodent (approx. 37–39 °C). Snakes (especially pythons and boas) have thermoreceptors, and "warm" prey triggers the feeding reflex.

  • Checking temperature and core: Hold the rat (through the bag) and squeeze its abdomen.

  • It must be soft: If you feel a hard lump or cold inside, the center is still frozen. Never serve a partially frozen rat – it will cause temperature shock and fatal digestive issues.

  • Temperature test: Place the rat (in the bag) against the inside of your wrist (like checking baby milk). It should be pleasantly warm, not hot.
